Residents run the risk of not receiving correspondence due to untidy mailboxes.According to the representatives of the Lithuanian Post Office, although the number of unsuitable boxes is decreasing significantly in the cities, the situation is bad in the villages - people often turn unused items into mailboxes.Zita, who lives in Vilkoliai village in Rokiškis district, replaced her old mailbox with a microwave oven.According to her, correspondence was constantly getting wet in the old one."I thought, an unused item, that's what I came up with," says Z. Butkuvienė.- It won't rain or snow. They bring the mail or I order medicine, they won't put it in a simple box, but this is where everything goes."Postman Nida Šalaikiskienė says that mailboxes in villages are so unique that many of them could become museum exhibits."Hangs on handbags and backpacks, puts them in microwaves, bread pans, just panels, some parts of refrigerators, in short, everything," she says. But there are also those who do not have mailboxes at all.For example, in an apartment building, sometimes only a few residents have them, and others say that they do not read newspapers, do not communicate with letters, so they are not needed."You know, there are many of them and the fact that it is relevant for them is that it is convenient when, as I say, the postman brings a newspaper to bed, even if they read it, it would be good at all.And they don't understand why, let's say, one can bring it in through the door, the other can't," says N. Šalaikiskienė.According to Lithuanian Post representative Deimantė Žebrauskaitė, compared to previous years, messy mailboxes are decreasing, especially in cities. However, about 40 percent of the population still do not install them properly. If the situation does not change, they risk not receiving any more correspondence."Our postmen are not obliged to deliver either correspondence or subscriptions if the box is not equipped or the box is not locked, is not sealed, is overflowing or does not have proper addressing on it," notes the representative of the post office. If the mailbox is not in order, correspondence will return to the post office.Shipments are kept here for 30 days, periodicals for 2 months. If it is not picked up within that time, the parcels are returned to the sender.
