During the polymerisation process, which is performed on alkyl acrylate to produce this ingredient, benzene is often used as the solvent. Benzene is a highly carcinogenic, toxic, environmentally hazardous and is an irritant. It is recommended that total benzene content not exceed 0.5% of a product’s weight, products contain this little benzene are safe for topical use but benzene levels have been found to be as high as 1.1% in some cosmetic formulations which may be harmful to health. There has been a study performed on the inhalation of AACP in rats over a two year period. The results showed that AACP cause lung inflammation, hyperplasia and tumour growth, so prolonged inhalation of this ingredient in aerosol form may prove hazardous. There have been numerous studies regarding dermal irritation after topical application of AACP in concentrations as high as 30%. None of these studies have indicated any level of irritation (Cosmetic Ingredient Review).
